The exhibition Carlo Previtali.TrasfiguRaku is the first ever in which the well-known painter, sculptor and architect from Lombardy, born in Bergamo in 1947, fresh from his anthological The intelligence of matter in Milan’s Palazzo Pirelli last June, which summarized 50 years of his career, he presents himself only as a virtuoso raku potter, with six of his superselected works.
A choice made because in the catalog of the “definitive” Milanese exhibition, the author of the historical-critical introductory essay, Enzo Biffi Gentili, argued a “revisionist” thesis: among the many subjects and techniques successfully tackled by Carlo Previtali, starting with bronze, raku ceramics should be considered as his “major art,” in the international context of polychrome figurative sculpture.
Since this was therefore his debut as a great ceramic artisan who was also technically extraordinary in Faenza, the world capital of clay art, a most authoritative chaperone was needed to patronize that radical new thesis.
This key role was assumed by Davide Servadei of Bottega d’Arte Ceramica Gatti. What else…?
